Elisa Distefano meets with Gail Janicola to ask the toughest mom-to-be questions.

What I Wish I Asked Sooner – A Must Watch for Moms-To-Be

It’s not too often in (at least in my) life that you meet someone who just wants to help- and nothing else in return.

Gail Janicola is one of those people. I met Gail through one of my closest friends (Ingrid Dodd … who had Gail as part of the NY Fit Fest) … the next thing I knew I was invited to Gail’s home, treated to healthy warm freshly baked cookies and I felt like I knew her forever and felt comfortable talking about personal things and all things pregnancy and babies.

Gail is the founder of Moms on Top- she’s basically a Mom-Mentor. I never knew such thing existed! When Ingrid first wanted me to meet her I hesitated because I feel like in the past when I’ve been introduced to people “like” Gail (who actually weren’t like Gail at all once I met her) I felt very judged. I’m so happy we met- and only wish we met sooner- because I feel like I have this source of calm and wealth of knowledge on speed dial if I need help or advice.

A few weeks ago, Gail made visits to my house (ugh no freshly baked cookies here- but I did offer some store bought snacks!). I asked if I could record her sharing with me some things I never knew or thought of.  Again, I wish I asked her these questions sooner!

If you are pregnant or know someone who is, I hope this helps you- that’s why I am posting it. And remember that there is so much help out there, pre and post baby… you just have to find it and be willing to accept it.

— SO WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A MIDWIFE & A DOULA?

I am embarrassed that I didn’t know. After I had Christian my mom came to stay with me for a week, but I never thought of getting any additional help. I also had no idea what a doula was ( I thought it was someone that helped with natural births)… now I think I want one!

— WHAT SHOULD I ASK MY DOCTOR BEFORE GIVING BIRTH?

I had to have a C-section, but I thought this was especially interesting for any mom-to-be who does not plan on having a section.

— HOW TO ADVOCATE FOR YOURSELF IN THE HOSPITAL?

Honestly, I did not have a great hospital experience last time. I want to do better this time.

— THIS ONE IS REALLY PERSONAL- BREAST & BOTTLE FEEDING

I never thought it would be so difficult to breast feed. Instead of feeling encouraged in the hospital, I felt so discouraged. It was interesting to hear Gail’s thoughts.
