It’s sad that we’ve relegated birth to a series of medical procedures that, ostensibly, guarantee a healthy outcome. Besides the fact that routine interventions actually tip the scales away from benefit and toward risk, this cultural concept also dismisses the most powerful dynamic of birth… that it is the creation of a family, and, if nurtured as such, will serve to change and enrich the entire life of parent and child.
